Our Mission

Conservation International has commissioned AECOM to assist 11 cities and municipalities across the Philippines to strengthen the resilience of vulnerable communities through Green-Gray Infrastructure.

Goal One

Identify the most pressing challenges facing these diverse communities across the nation, and focus on nature-based opportunities to tackle vulnerability to climate change, extreme weather, water insecurity and pollution, and threats to the livelihoods of millions.

Goal Two

Build awareness, knowledge, and technical capability to craft and implement solutions that balance natural systems and minimal engineering to reduce risk and to bolster economic potential for these communities.

Goal Three

Craft exemplar project planning and development packages that concisely make the economic and scientific case for Green-Gray Infrastructure to a global capital audience, an audience increasingly eager to harness green financing to meet science-based targets in the fight against climate change.

The 11 partner Local Government Units are committed to nature-based solutions as catalysts for their communities, to create jobs and inclusive opportunity by reducing climate change risk.

“It is unequivocal that human influence has warned the atmosphere, ocean and land.”

- United Nations Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change

The impact of climate change is more pressing than ever. And human contribution is clearly a contributor, including infrastructure activities that exacerbate the increase of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Rediscovering nature-based, Green and Gray solutions help reduce our risk and exposure, address fundamental issues of water security, and reduce GHG contributions from traditional, concrete-heavy infrastructure solutions.

There is more capital than ever before focused on solutions for climate adaptation and sustainable economic resilience.

With such unequivocal global alignment on the root cause of the climate emergency, and rising accessibility of sustainability finance or green finance tools, now is the time to organize communities and projects that can make a difference.

Accessible to everyone

The Practical Guide to Implementing Green-Gray Infrastructure is a tool for identifying, funding, planning, designing, constructing, and monitoring green-gray infrastructure projects, to increase the resilience of vulnerable cities, communities, and assets around the world.

The Guide includes 35 case studies from around the world, identifies key challenges a practitioner may seek to resolve, and where green-gray solutions can meet project goals and integrate into different land use types.

As the Community of Practice continues to build the knowledge base about how to implement green-gray infrastructure solutions, we are committed to pre-competitive collaboration to create fertile ground for innovation and new partnerships within and across sectors.

This is a living document and the Community of Practice will continue to improve and update the Guide as new information is discovered and as design techniques evolve.
